Law Squad was started in 2001 to address a growing concern among
parents of teenagers regarding the legal consequences of teen conduct.
More and more, teenagers are finding themselves getting arrested and
their parents being sued for common problems like fights in schools,
driving with a junior license, car accidents and sexual activity. The
laws are getting more restrictive and the punishments are getting
stricter. Parents and teens are unsure of the ramifications of certain
conduct and unfamiliar with the legal system.
In 2004, due to the increased concerns surrounding the junior and
senior prom, several area high schools began making attendance at a Law
Squad “Prom Issues” seminar mandatory for parents of kids who
were going to be attending prom – the students can not receive a
prom ticket without providing proof that their parent had attended one
of our seminars. Schools have reported a marked decrease in
problems with pre-prom and post-prom parties since adopting this
requirement.
In 2005,
the growing popularity and recognized effectiveness of the Law Squad
Program caused a tremendous increase in the number of high schools
holding seminars. Several schools have us come out more than once a
year. 2005 also brought the start of “The Law Squad” television program
on North Hempstead Television. The show, hosted by Law Squad founder
Oscar Michelen, is aired on Cablevision channel 18 or 20 and is
broadcast into all homes within the Town of North Hempstead and parts of
The City of Glen Cove. For show times and topics, go to the “Schedule
of Events” page.
The Law
Squad continued its expansion and diversification in 2006, with the
addition of a seminar geared especially to the students which is
presented during the day in various formats. The seminar can include a
short quiz “The Constitution and You”
and can be attend
by Junior and Senior students.
The Law Squad
does not charge for its seminars – they are completely free.
